A tribute film for an 80th birthday, shaped around one family's story of migration, sacrifice, work, and the people built around it.
Creative approach
The brief was deeply personal. This was not a normal brand video or a fast social edit. It needed to carry a family's respect for Dave Samra and still feel watchable in a room full of people. The story moves from Punjab to Canada, from childhood memory to family, work, friendship, and legacy.
We built the film around illustrated scenes because a literal photo montage would have felt too flat. The pencil-sketch style gave the story a softer, almost remembered quality. It let us show moments that were not captured on camera while keeping the tone intimate and respectful.
The edit was paced like a tribute speech: calm at the beginning, warmer through the middle, then more emotional as the family and celebration come into view. The final event footage gives the piece its release. After the illustrated history, the audience lands back in the real room with the people the story was made for.
The result is a long-form family film that feels considered rather than decorative. It gives the client a polished piece for the birthday event, but also something the family can keep after the night is over.
